Statement by NDP Sports Critic, Matthew Dubé, on Russia’s recent anti-gay laws
New Democrats call on the Conservative government once again to make clear its position on recent anti-gay laws in Russia, host of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi next February.
The NDP condemns the adoption of these homophobic laws. Last June, we asked Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird to pressure Russian authorities to reject these laws, which are contrary to international human rights standards.
In response to growing concerns of the LGBT community and various stakeholders in Canada and abroad, Minister Baird must immediately express Canada’s firm opposition to these laws.
We must ensure the safety of our Canadian athletes and special envoys while they are in Russia and make certain they will not experience any discrimination during their Olympic experience.
Foreigners and tourists are directly targeted by Russia’s recent anti-gay laws, giving authorities the rights to detain anyone suspected of being homosexual or pro-gay.
The NDP is calling on Minister Baird to act promptly to fight anti-gay repression in Russia.
