What Does It Take to Get Kicked Out of the Green Party?

Yesterday, Edmonton-Strathcona Green candidate Michael Kalmanovitch endorsed New Democrat Heather McPherson because “the climate crisis is too important.”

Immediately, the Green Party issued a press release removing him as a candidate and revoking his party membership.

Here are some things that will not get you dismissed from the Greens:

Endorsing candidates who aren’t Greens - so long as they aren't New Democrats, it seems

Endorsing independents who are running against Green Party candidates: “I’m absolutely confident that Jane and Jodie can make a big difference in parliament. I don’t want to lose their voices on the national stage.” (Elizabeth May)

Sharing Islamophobic comments

Sharing a Facebook note that says “in Islam, a Muslim man can marry a child as young as seven and consummate this marriage at 9” and then saying it was “not racist at all on my part .... sorry for those who took it wrong," when asked to apologize. (Katherine Turgeon)

Posting a link to a video that says “The problem? It’s Islam”and commenting that “the problem is not only Islam itself, but blind, unquestioning faith in any context.” (Greg de Luca)

Saying that immigrants should “respect our opinions and our way of life, it’s for you to immerse, if you don’t like that simply find another place to live.” (Jocelyn Rioux)

Calling for the niqab and burqa to be banned. (Aline Bégin)

Anti-choice views

Telling voters “I personally am Pro-Life because I could not give more rights to animals and remove rights from potential humans,” and answering “no” when asked in 2018 if there are any circumstances under which a woman should have access to an abortion. (Marc Vercouteren)

Saying your view on choice is that women should need “medical professionals and family members to sign off on the act.” (Greg “the Green Man” de Luca)

Answering a question about your view on the right to abortion with “I want to warn you, I will NOT be cornered into a simple, polarized position.” (Gordon Kubanek)

Placing a caveat on the right to choose that “abortion must not be a means to birth control.” (Marc Reinarz)

Saying “I hate abortion, so I want to make sure there’s everything we do as a society to prevent the need for a woman to exercise that right.” (Robert Mellalieu)

Promoting 9/11 conspiracy theories

Musing that “I have been trying to ignore this for many years. I am concerned we will not see the end to violence in Syria, Iraq, Paris and around the world until we look closer to home,” on a post from Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. (Steve Dyck)

Telling a radio host that “the corporate media are all bought into the whole 9/11 thing,” and that “I’ve seen lots of the evidence. I’ve heard from lots of these people, watched a lot of these videos, read a lot of this information, but it’s still not scratching the surface.” (Paul Manly min 1:11:30)

Sharing your theory that “Grenfell Tower Fire started 4th floor burnt to the top and still standing. World Trade Center fire started in the middle and causes complete collapse within hours? Hmmmm” (Robert Mellalieu)

Supporting Donald Trump

Saying of Donald Trump “he is the only politician who has kept his word of these promises after he was elected. I know of none in Canada who did this" and "What he says is so true!!” of a Trump video that includes him saying of Hillary Clinton “Honestly, she should be locked up.” (Louis Bérubé min 10:16)

Supporting Conservative ideas
Telling voters “We have a lot in common with conservatives at their ideological core.” (Mark de Bruijn)

Saying "We could get confused with the Conservatives because we are actually a fiscally conservative party." (Jennifer Purdy, today)
