Statement by NDP on World Autism Awareness Day

Better understand this disorder and offer better services to those affected and their families

For the first time this year, Canada is officially marking World Autism Awareness Day on April 2. Legislation to this effect was unanimously adopted in the House of Commons, June 20 of last year.

It is estimated that nearly 48,000 children and 144,000 adults in Canada live with some form of Autism Spectrum Disorder. One in 150 children is affected. Treatment for this disorder can cost between $50,000 and $100,000 each year. Depending on their place of residence, not all affected Canadians have access to the same care, and provincial health plans do not pay the same amounts. Wait lists for rehabilitation centres are often several years long.

Once adults, it is common for people with autism to lose access to public education and specialized services, which allow them to progress and lead, along with their families, a quality and fulfilling life.

The New Democratic Party hopes that this international day will help Canadians better understand the disorder and the need to offer adequate support to people living with it and their families.
