Six Years Later, Indigenous People Still Need Justice and Healing

NDP critic for Indigenous Services and Indigenous-Crown Relations, Lori Idlout, made the following statement:

“I am deeply saddened to learn that Keeseekoose First Nation has discovered more than 50 potential unmarked graves on the grounds of a former residential school. This is heartbreaking and further proof of the genocide against Indigenous people in this country.

Six years ago, the Prime Minister promised to take significant steps in the path towards reconciliation. However, Indigenous peoples in Canada are still struggling for justice.

For months, New Democrats have been calling for action from the Liberal government to give Indigenous people the truth and justice they are owed. We have called for the creation of a special prosecutor who would reach out to the International Criminal Court in recognition that this system represents a crime against humanity. In addition, the NDP has been calling for a major increase in funding to undertake forensic investigations at sites of former residential schools – investigations that must be under the authority of the affected Indigenous communities.

New Democrats are committed to holding the Liberals to account and supporting the needs of First Nation, Métis and Inuit communities."
