Singh and Alberta NDP MPs send letter asking Liberal government to help Albertans

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and MPs Heather McPherson (Edmonton Strathcona) and Blake Desjarlais (Edmonton Griesbach), made the following joint statement:

"In Alberta, the COVID-19 situation is as dire as it was preventable. The number of COVID cases has exceeded all previous waves by exponential amounts. ICUs are on the very real point of collapse with a shortage of beds, healthcare workers, and medical equipment such as ventilators. Triaging has already begun to occur in most Alberta hospitals with severe consequences for Albertans, including the cancelation of cancer treatments and paediatric surgeries. This also means that doctors, nurses and health care professionals are being put in an impossible position of determining likely health outcomes based on age, health, and other factors that would not affect care prior to this latest wave.

We recognize that health is predominantly a provincial jurisdiction but, considering the dearth of leadership shown by Jason Kenney and his United Conservative Government, we implore the federal government to use the tools at its disposal to protect Albertans.

This is an urgent emergency and we cannot wait for the House of Commons to resume. We must take action now. "
