REALITY CHECK: Trudeau twiddles thumbs while big tech stacks the deck

Another day, another sign consumers are about to get walloped by Canada’s cell phone cartel—and once again the Prime Minister does nothing.

We’ve recently learned that Freedom Mobile/Shaw Communications have taken a pass at bidding on the new wireless spectrum auction—that thing they need to expand your customer base, grow your business and presumably offer better prices. It’s curious that mere moments after a merger between Shaw and Rogers gets announced, Shaw loses their appetite for growth. Curious indeed.

The motivations and reasons why are confidential and we won’t engage in speculation, but the implications are entirely predictable. Canadian consumers, who already pay some of the highest rates for cellphone and internet service in the world, will pay more with less competition.

While Liberals are busy protecting the massive profits of telecoms giants gouging Canadians, New Democrats will fight for real competition and cheaper prices for working people.

Canadians deserve someone on their side.
