REALITY CHECK: Freeland doubles down on cuts to unemployed

Canada lost 68,000 jobs and unemployment increased in May. Almost 2 million Canadians are on Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) and still struggling.

On top of that, the cost of living is on the rise, but Freeland and Trudeau think Canadians should get less help.

On June 16, in the House of Commons, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland ignored NDP calls to extend CRB payments at current levels. Instead, she doubled down on her plan for CRB cuts and outright refused the NDP’s simple proposal.

Jagmeet Singh’s question: “Will the Prime Minister reverse his decision to cut help to families in the middle of this pandemic?”

Chrystia Freeland’s answer: “Why is he stopping our government from extending the CRB?... If the NDP thinks that support is no longer necessary, they should be open and say that to Canadians. Otherwise, help us pass the Budget”

The NDP have explicitly asked Justin Trudeau to extend CRB benefits. Instead, Chrystia Freeland is determined to cut help for the unemployed by 40%.

Justin Trudeau and Chrystia Freeland are turning their backs on Canadians in their time of need.

Canadians deserve better.
