Reality Check: Environment Minister fails to take responsibility for his government’s climate failures
OTTAWA — Canadians are already living through the deadly and catastrophic impacts of the climate emergency while the Liberals drag their feet.
The Minister of Environment, Steven Guilbeault, recently said he could accelerate climate action if he didn't have to “fight” Conservatives.
While Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives aren’t interested in fighting the climate crisis, Minister Guilbeault fails to own up to the failings of his own Liberal caucus.
- Guilbeault's government meets with Big Oil and gas on average four to five times per working day.
- After promising to end public handouts to the fossil fuel sector, his own Liberal government pledged over $12 billion in new tax credits to Big Oil for risky carbon capture projects—part of a carbon capture strategy Big Oil helped write!
- Despite Guilbeault touting his progress on Canada’s biodiversity targets, his cabinet colleague, Jonathan Wilkinson, says the Liberal government is open to drilling for oil in marine refuges designed to protect vulnerable species.
Minister Guilbeault talks about fighting the climate crisis, but his government’s actions just don’t add up.
Canadians worried about the climate emergency deserve much better.
