Protecting Quebec culture is a priority for New Democrats
Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada's NDP, issued the following statement:
“During la Fête nationale du Québec and Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, Quebeckers and Francophones across Canada are uniting in celebration of the rich and vibrant history and culture we all share.
This vibrant culture and our heritage is fed everyday by local artists and artisans. But that culture is under threat because of industry transformation and foreign web giants.
Local production houses simply can't compete against large companies like Netflix. Québeckers and the arts community have been clear. They want multinational web companies to pay their fair share, and they want quotas in place to protect and promote Francophone or Indigenous content, actors, and Québécois production companies.
So as we all celebrate this week, New Democrats have a message for Québeckers and Francophones across Canada. You can count on us to continue fighting digital giants in support of artists, local production companies and the francophone content that makes Canada so unique.”
