People have a right to know if they are consuming GMOs: NDP

The government should make the labelling of food products containing ingredients that have been genetically modified mandatory, claims the NDP.

Today, in the House of Commons, NDP MP Murray Rankin (Victoria) gave notice of a motion calling for the mandatory labeling of food products containing ingredients that have been genetically modified.

“For a decade now, polls have shown that nearly 90 percent of Canadians support labelling genetically modified foods, but both Conservative and Liberal governments have failed to listen. It’s time for Ottawa to catch up with what nine out 10 Canadians want and 64 other countries already do” said Murray.

Consumers have a right to know what they are buying. Labelling of genetically modified foods will allow people to make their own choices about genetically modified foods.”

The full text of motion is: That in the opinion of the House, the government should introduce mandatory labeling of food products containing ingredients that have been genetically modified.
