Parliamentary report supports NDP’s Call to put a windfall tax on corporate grocery stores making massive profits
New Democrats are calling on Liberals to start supporting families, by making huge grocery chains pay their fair share
NDP Food Price Inflation Critic Alistair MacGregor made the following statement following the conclusion and recommendations of Parliament’s food price and greedflation study:
“Under Justin Trudeau, the prices of food have been rising non-stop. Families have been going to food banks in record numbers, people are skipping meals and Canadians all around are making sacrifices to get-by.
And while families cut back, grocery giants are making billions. In fact, they’re making more money than they ever have before. Something has got to change.
That’s why, while Justin Trudeau and Pierre Poilievre stood by grocery executives, New Democrats pushed for a study into this blatant greedflation, and it’s why the Competition Bureau of Canada has launched an investigation into massive grocery retailers’ profits.
The committee heard from many important witnesses, including food bank directors and the CEOs of Canada’s largest grocery retailers. Now we’ve got these concrete recommendations: the NDP called on Justin Trudeau to make these mega grocery chains, who’ve been driving up prices, pay their fair share with a windfall tax. This recommendation comes with a caveat from the Liberals, that a windfall profits tax be connected to findings by the Competition Bureau. But New Democrats believe we should be acting sooner – so we’re calling for the Liberals to remove this caveat and introduce a windfall tax immediately.
Doing this will incentivize grocery CEOs and executives to keep prices low and will put more money back in people’s pockets. New Democrats are urging the government to listen to this recommendation and create a windfall tax on grocery chains. We’ll keep sticking up for Canadians, not standing by the richest CEOs.”
