Official opposition statement on the Temporary Foreign Worker Program

NDP Employment and Social Development critic Jinny Sims (Newton—North Delta) made the following statement today after her amendment to the Liberal motion on the Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Program was rejected:

“The Liberal Party, like the Conservative government, clearly doesn’t understand the deep problems plaguing the Temporary Foreign Worker Program.

Today, they refused to call for a moratorium on hiring lower-skilled workers in all industries, pending an independent review of the program, as I proposed in my motion -despite the fact that they voted for one last week.

The Liberals apparently believe that all that is required in response to rampant abuse is to restore the program as it existed when the Liberals created it. They don’t seem to understand that the program was deeply flawed from the very start.

We need more than a few quick fixes – that’s why the NDP is calling for a moratorium on lower-skilled occupations while an independent review of the program takes place.”
