New Democrats support Iranians fighting for justice

NDP critic for Foreign Affairs, Heather McPherson, made the following statement:

“After the horrific murder of Mahsa Amini, women and men in Iran are taking courageous steps to fight for their rights and freedom. We commend the bravery of Iranians who are fighting for themselves’ and for generations of women to come.

Mahsa’s tragic death is a reminder that gender-based violence is still a reality for many women and girls around the world and Canadians are rightfully concerned about the on-going situation in Iran. It is disturbing to hear of the reports of the near-total internet blackouts as the Iranian government attempts to suppress protests.

The federal government has a responsibility to uphold women’s rights on a global stage in a meaningful way. This is a responsibility that must be taken seriously-- not just following crises, but in a sustained and purposeful way. Canada must live up to the ambitions of the Feminist International Assistance Policy.

New Democrats wholly support the UN Human Rights Office’s call for an independent investigation into Mahsa’s death. We will continue to push the government to support the rights of women in Iran and around the world and ensure all those fleeing violence are able to seek asylum here in Canada.

Our thoughts are with the family of Mahsa Amini and every woman fighting for their rights.”
