New Democrats seek Emergency Debate on Trump’s threats to Canadian sovereignty

OTTAWA — As Donald Trump's threats to Canada and our allies continue to mount, NDP Leader Don Davies today asked for an Emergency Debate in the House of Commons to discuss how best to protect Canadian sovereignty and strengthen our security.

“Donald Trump has made alarming threats and taken aggressive actions that directly and indirectly imperil Canada,” Davies said. "Many observers and experts from across the political spectrum are expressing deep concerns for Canada’s vulnerability politically, economically and militarily.

“Canadians are coming together in defence of our country; politicians in Ottawa need to do the same,” said Davies.

Davies' letter was submitted to the Speaker of the House of Commons first thing this morning. If successful, the House of Commons will debate this urgent matter this evening.

"The Prime Minister was right to tell world leaders that the old global order has ruptured," said Davies. "Members of Parliament should be afforded the opportunity to debate such a fundamental shift, and possible actions that could be taken to defend our sovereignty, increase our security and assert our place in the world.”
