New Democrats join Canadians in celebrating Black History Month

New Democrat Multiculturalism critic Rachel Blaney made the following statement on Black History Month:

“As Black History Month begins, New Democrats join Canadians in celebrating and honouring the legacy of Black Canadians, past and present.

Despite the countless achievements and contributions to our society, Black Canadians are often missing from our history books and their sacrifices are not well known or recognized.

Black History Month is an opportunity for all Canadians to gain insight into the experiences of Black Canadians and to recognize their vital role in making Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and thriving country it is today.

Through courage, strength and perseverance, Black Canadians have overcome obstacles and fought for justice and equality. This strong history of activism continues and is found in the Black Lives Matter movement and other movements fighting to end racism against Black Canadians today, and every day.

Progress has been made in the fight against prejudice, discrimination and inequality, but there is much more to do. We will continue to work towards a more just, equal and inclusive Canada for all.”
