NDP supports the people of Ukraine in emergency debate

NDP critic for foreign affairs, Heather McPherson, made the following statement:

"Like many Canadians, New Democrats are alarmed by escalating threats of further Russian invasion into Ukraine and the danger this poses to the Ukrainian people and their democracy. Canada was the first country to recognize Ukraine’s independence 30 years ago and we must continue to support an independent and democratic Ukraine.

Tonight’s debate in the House of Commons is essential. All parties need to come together and work towards a solution to deescalate the situation and help Ukrainians who are living under mounting tensions.

There is still time to find a peaceful solution to this crisis. The NDP has always believed peace is achievable through diplomacy. We will always support the people of Ukraine with the development of fair and good governance principles. That's why we were the first party to bring up the concerns in Ukraine at the foreign affairs committee.

Canada should focus its efforts on diplomacy, non-lethal assistance, and possible economic sanctions against Russia - including Magnitsky sanctions - as a deterrent. Bloodshed must be avoided through coordinated international pressure and stronger sanctions.

We urge the Liberal government to advocate for women to be included in negotiations and discussions on the future of the region. The Trudeau government must honour its commitment to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda to ensure the full inclusion of women in all diplomatic, conflict prevention and peacebuilding efforts.

New Democrats recognize and value the important relationship between Canada and Ukraine and will continue to push the Liberal government to do its part to support Ukrainians through robust diplomacy. Millions of Eastern Europeans are counting on us to help foster peace. "
