NDP statement on World Oceans Day

Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“Today, while we celebrate World Oceans Day, it’s important not just to reflect on the important role our oceans play in Canadian’s livelihoods and providing food security – but also to recommit protecting our oceans for future generations.

In Canada, we have the longest coastline in the world – and we must do our part to protect it. With wildfires raging across our country and pollution harming the ocean and coastlines, it’s never been clearer that we need to be protecting our waters.

But years of Conservative and Liberal governments failing to put the needs of Canadians before the wants of the richest corporations have hurt our environment and oceans and put Canada behind on fighting the climate crisis.

Even after seeing the damage climate change has caused to our oceans and marine life, the Liberals and Conservatives are still teaming up to let oil and gas CEOs off the hook for paying what they owe.

And while they prop up oil and gas with billions of public dollars, the Liberals are failing to act urgently to end the use of all single-use plastics and stop pollution on our beaches and oceans.

New Democrats are committed to making sure that Canada’s biggest polluters pay their fair share and keeping plastics out of our waters with a national strategy against plastic pollution.

Today, let’s recommit to working together for greater protections for Canadian coastlines and the world’s oceans.”
