NDP Statement for World Environment Day

Canada's NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh issued the following statement:
“Today, as we celebrate World Environment Day, we come together to reflect on the importance of our planet and the urgent need to protect and preserve it for future generations. This day is a global reminder that we all share a responsibility to care for and nurture our environment. As wildfires rage across the country, the impacts of the climate crisis could not be more clear.
Plastic pollution in our oceans puts our environment at risk – hurting wildlife, coastlines, and communities. This year’s World Environment Day theme highlights the need for Canada to be a leader on bold and urgent action to fight the plastic pollution crisis. New Democrats will keep pushing for a national strategy against plastic pollution.
The Liberal government has failed to act with the urgency needed to end the use of all single use plastics and stop pollution on our beaches, oceans and rivers.
This is just the latest in a long line of Liberal and Conservative governments failing to put the needs of people and the planet ahead of corporations. Despite promising to end fossil fuel subsidies, the Liberals have doubled down on handing out billions of dollars of public money to the richest oil and gas companies, letting them off the hook for paying their fair share.
New Democrats will keep fighting for climate action, an end to fossil fuel subsidies and a sustainable future that works for everyone – not just the ultra-wealthy. Canadians are counting on our elected leaders to do better, and together we can protect our environment, planet and our collective future.”
