NDP Statement on World Cancer Day

NDP Health critic Don Davies made the following statement on World Cancer Day:

“With the theme ‘We can. I can’, World Cancer Day 2016 will explore how everyone – researchers, family members, volunteers, medical professionals, governments and donors – can do their part to reduce the global burden of cancer.

The federal government has an important role to play in Canada – especially to ensure better, more equal access to cancer drugs throughout the country. Increasing numbers of Canadians have to rely on private insurance to pay for their cancer medications. All too often, only certain drugs are covered, and too many people have to be treated in hospital in order to receive the medicine they need.

This is unacceptable in a country like ours. Cancer treatment shouldn’t lead to financial burden and additional emotional stress for patients and their families.

New Democrats believe that Canadians need universal prescription drug coverage. We must ensure that every Canadian – regardless of their age or place of residence – has access to the drugs they need to keep them healthy.

We will continue to do everything we can to fight this disease and improve cancer treatment for all Canadians.”
