NDP statement on water crisis in Iqaluit

Leader of Canada’s NDP Jagmeet Singh and NDP MP for Nunavut Lori Idlout made the following statement:

“Clean drinking water is a right and no community in Canada should go without it. Our thoughts are with Inuit and Nunavummiut in the face of this water crisis. All communities deserve access to clean drinking water.

The federal government must immediately respond to the state of emergency in Iqaluit due to a contaminated water supply. The Liberal government can help by providing short-term supplies of water and making available any resource to address the cause of the emergency.

Access to clean water is an all-too-common problem in rural and remote communities, especially those in Northern areas and among Indigenous communities. The government must use all resources to fix this.

New Democrats have reached out to Mayor Bell to offer help to find an urgent solution. Thank you to the dedicated workers who are working on finding a solution and helping community members through this emergency. We encourage Iqaluit residents to follow the guidance of the Nunavut Department of Health and the City of Iqaluit on how to access drinking water until a solution is in place.”
