NDP Statement on Vimy Ridge Day

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

Today we remember the courage and sacrifice of all Canadians who fought at Vimy Ridge.

As we pay tribute on the 102nd anniversary, we must stop to reflect on the service of those who fought in this key battle.

Over a century ago, all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force battled side by side to take control of the escarpment. 3,600 of these soldiers gave their lives at Vimy Ridge.

In a war known for its brutality, the extraordinary bravery and strategy of the Canadian soldiers was, and will always be, recognized as critical to the success of the mission for allied forces. We honour them by remembering the determination and courage that led to such an important victory.

Reflecting on the sacrifices of the past also compels us to remember the dedication of today’s Canadian Armed Forces personnel working to bring stability to regions around the world. On this day of commemoration, our thoughts go out to the men and women who have served and continue to serve Canada, at home and abroad.

Lest we forget.
