NDP statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance

The NDP Critic and Deputy Critic for 2SLGBTQI+ Rights, Randall Garrison and Blake Desjarlais, made the following statement:

“Today, on Transgender Day of Remembrance, we must reflect on the lives of two-spirit, trans and gender diverse peoples who have been murdered or faced violence simply for being who they are. We must come together to recognize the loss faced by loved ones and the community while recommitting to ending all discriminatory and transphobic acts.

Two-spirit, trans, and gender-diverse people who are living in poverty, racialized or involved in sex work face the highest rates of violence in Canada. More must be done to ensure that no person in this country has to worry about their safety or the safety of their loved ones.

New Democrats will keep pushing this government to take actions that support two-spirit, trans and gender-diverse people. The Liberal government needs to guarantee access to supportive and gender-affirming health care and take stronger action to counter transphobia and the discrimination and violence which flow from it. There is a lot of work to be done to make sure everyone in this country feels safe and respected.

While today is a day for mourning, it is also a day to celebrate the resiliency and strength of the 2SLGBTQI+ community here in Canada and around the world. New Democrats stand with you, and we will never stop fighting to protect your rights and well-being.”
