NDP statement on situation in Aleppo

NDP Foreign Affairs Critic, Hélène Laverdière released the following statement today:

The situation in Aleppo is horrifying. The situation in Syria is devastating. New Democrats call on the government of Canada to increase its diplomatic efforts for a ceasefire and political solution to the crisis. And we must support the investigation and prosecution of war crimes. These atrocities must not go unpunished.

Today, many Canadians are asking us: what can we do?

Now is the time to support the humanitarian organizations on the ground in Syria and in the region. I urge all Canadians who can: donate. Donate to those doing life-saving work in a situation of desperate need: MSF, Humanitarian Coalition, ICRC, Islamic Relief, UNICEF, World Vision are a few of the many groups that are on the ground.

And we must not forget the other crises that are in urgent need of our attention. These include the devastating humanitarian crisis in Yemen, caused by the Saudi-led war and fuelled by the availability of arms; and the awful unfolding situation in South Sudan, where there are alarming signs of atrocities. We must act now.

New Democrats stand in solidarity with the people of Syria, and with all those who aspire for peace and human rights.

Aleppo, we stand with you.
