NDP Statement on Remembrance Day

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“COVID-19 has devastated many communities across our country. And in many regions, Canadians are going to spend what is likely to be their first-ever Remembrance Day at home instead of with their neighbours at ceremonies at their local cenotaph.

And this year, Canadians are reaching a significant milestone: the 75^th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.

Canadians from coast to coast to coast did their duty to fight fascism in Europe and bring us to victory in 1945.

We all owe our veterans an incredible debt of gratitude for what they did and continue to do for Canada and for peace and stability across the world.

They left a mark on the world. Canada’s relationship with the Netherlands, which was liberated by Canadian troops 75 years ago, is still defined by what those brave Canadians did during their brave push to free that country from the Nazis.

On Remembrance Day, we mark the sacrifice made by veterans in serving their country in war. This year, we’re able to thank them for their service in peacetime as well.

Too often, Canada isn’t doing right by veterans. They face long wait times, denials and other barriers to services and supports they need. We must to better.

We must stand up for them. Lest we forget.”
