NDP Statement on Pride Month

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“As Pride celebrations begin across Canada, I’m proud to stand in solidarity with members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community, and wish them a Happy Pride, wherever they may live.
Pride month is known as a time for celebration, but it’s also a time to renew our commitment to solidarity and activism, where the origins of Pride are rooted.
Courageous activism to ensure 2SLGBTQI+ Canadians can live free from hate and discrimination has brought us far. But we still have more work to do until all members of the 2SLGBTQI+ community have full equality in Canada.
Over the past few years, we have seen a rise in hate crimes, particularly against trans people. It has made celebrations, such as Pride month, more dangerous and uncertain.
New Democrats believe we can do more, such as sustained federal funding for 2SLGBTQI+-led community organizations to keep communities safe and for the government to commit to providing support and care for all, no matter where you live.
This Pride Month, New Democrats celebrate the victories of the 2SLGBTQI+ community and recommit to always fighting by your side for full equality and a future where people can live free of discrimination, homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia.”
