NDP Statement on Philippine Independence Day

Canada’s NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh, made the following statement:

“New Democrats join the Filipino community here in Canada and worldwide to celebrate Philippine Independence Day.

Today, we recognize and honour the almost one million Canadian Filipinos and the positive impact they have made and continue to make in Canada and throughout the world.

Canada and the Philippines continue to have a strong connection, and we encourage this government to reinforce the friendship through more trade, immigration, and cultural ties.

Many Canadian Filipinos work tirelessly looking after our loved ones as caregivers, and the NDP will continue to push for the support and respect they deserve. NDP MP Bonita Zarrillo (Port Moody–Coquitlam) has been fighting relentlessly for the government to turn the Canada Caregiver Credit into a refundable tax benefit to put money back in caregivers’ pockets, and we won’t stop there.
