NDP Statement on National Indigenous History Month

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

This month is National Indigenous History Month - an opportunity for Canadians to celebrate the diverse heritages, languages, cultural practices, and spiritual beliefs of the First people of this land, and acknowledge their historic contributions to the development of Canada.

This historic relationship remains our most significant as Canadians. We share a colonial history that, in the spirit of reconciliation, must be understood so that we may take the necessary actions to build a kinder society that is respectful of, and informed about Indigenous culture and issues.

We have made some progress, but so much important work still remains. We must especially ensure that Indigenous children can enjoy the same rights and opportunities as all children in Canada. We must also make sure that our political actions are guided by honest and true consultations with Indigenous Peoples in the full respect of human rights, and inherent and treaty rights.

On this 10thanniversary of National Indigenous History Month, as we celebrate the rich histories of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people, and as we reflect upon our shared past on this land, let’s also honour the strength of present-day Indigenous peoples and communities. Their promise of a better future will help us forge a more just and inclusive Canada for all.
