NDP Statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“Today, on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the women and girls who have been killed and the survivors of violence. We remember the horrific act committed at l’École Polytechnique where 14 women were shot and killed 32 years ago. We honour their memory, and we commit to eliminating violence against women and girls in all its forms.

In Canada, every six days, a woman is killed by her intimate partner and thousands of women and their children have to sleep in shelters because their home isn’t safe. We must put a stop to men’s violence against women, particularly Indigenous women, racialized women, trans women, low-income women and disabled women.

Just last week, a mother of two survived an attempted murder by her ex-intimate partner in Lanaudière, Québec. The rise of violence against women during the pandemic has been called ‘a pandemic within a pandemic.’

We must put a stop to men’s violence against women to save lives. Women and girls deserve to feel safe in their homes and communities. Unfortunately, the federal government is far from doing enough.

New Democrats will continue to fight for a funded national action plan to end gender-based violence. We must make sure that women and girls to receive the help they need when and where they need it. And while the Liberals stall, we will continue to work in partnership with Indigenous women, the families of the missing and murdered, and communities to immediately implement all the Inquiry’s Calls for Justice. This includes establishing a comprehensive national action plan to address violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA People.”
