NDP statement on the National Day of Mourning

Leader of Canada’s NDP, Jagmeet Singh, issued the following statement:

“Today, New Democrats stand in solidarity with workers across Canada to mark another National Day of Mourning. Let us all remember the Canadians who never returned home from work or who suffered severe workplace injuries - changing their lives and their families' lives forever.
Employers, government, and those in power must do whatever they can to prevent accidents, illnesses, injuries and death while on the job - that includes enforcing and strengthening existing laws and introducing new legislation. It means pushing the government to have the backs of workers always.
And New Democrats have been working hard. With the power of the NDP, federally regulated workers have ten paid sick days and a commitment from this government to introduce anti-scab legislation. This legislation will give workers more power to bargain for safer workplaces.
Still, there is more work to do. Canadian workers were put in dire positions during the COVID-19 pandemic, and many lost their lives. From factories and warehouses to hospitals and farms, workers are still asked to provide essential goods and care for Canadians, often in unsafe conditions. This needs to end. Every worker should be safe on the job and have all tools and support they need to do their work safely.
On this day, and every day, New Democrats stand on the side of workers. We will continue to fight to ensure workplace conditions are safe for all workers.”
