NDP statement on the National Day of Mourning

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“Today, New Democrats remember and stand in solidarity with workers across Canada to mark another National Day of Mourning. Today is a day to remember all the Canadians who left for work and never returned home or returned home after suffering life-changing workplace injuries.

The lives of these workers and their families were forever changed by workplace accidents that resulted in injuries, violence, and death.

After surviving the first few waves of the pandemic, managing an increased risk of COVID-19 exposure, and changing work conditions, today, workers continue to deal with unsafe workplaces – especially frontline and essential workers.

New Democrats used our power to get 10 paid sick days for federally regulated workers, but after letting workers go through the pandemic without paid sick days, Liberals are still using tactics to delay this important change for workers. We’ll keep fighting until all workers have the ability to stay home when they're sick.

On this Day of Mourning, we re-commit to continue our fight for safer workplaces. To remove profits from long-term care and bring in better conditions for workers helping our loved ones. To fight for better working conditions so workers feel safe and secure in their work environment.

We remember all our brothers and sisters who died or were seriously harmed at work. We mourn with the families who lost their loved ones.

New Democrats have always and will always stand with workers. We will continue to fight for workers and safe working conditions, and to make sure laws that protect workers from accidents, illness, and death are enforced. We will continue to fight so all workers have a safe and secure future.”
