NDP Statement on National Day of Mourning

Jagmeet Singh Leader of Canada’s NDP issued the following statement:

“Today, New Democrats stand in solidarity with workers across Canada in marking another National Day of Mourning as we remember the pain and loss of loved ones in their workplace.

As we enter the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, we think of all frontline and essential workers who risk their lives everyday just by going to work. And we remember those who lost their lives after getting COVID-19 on the job.

People are getting infected at work. And families are left mourning the loss of their loved ones.

On this Day of Mourning, we commit to continue to fight for safer workplaces.

To fight to remove profits from long-term care and bring in better conditions for workers helping our loved ones.

To fight for paid sick leave for every worker who needs it — because no one should have to choose between going to work sick and not paying their bills.

To fight for a livable wage so people can put food on the table.

To fight to make sure every frontline and essential worker gets priority access to a vaccine to keep themselves, their families and their communities safe from the spread of the virus.

To fight so all frontline workers have the protection and safety they deserve at work, including personal protective equipment.

Workers deserve to feel safe at work. And their families deserve to know their loved one is safe.

Today, on this Day of Mourning, we mourn with families and remember those we’ve lost.

You can count on New Democrats to continue to fight to for workers and to make sure their workplace conditions are safe.”
