NDP statement on Minister Wilson-Raybould's announcement on Bill C-262

NDP Indigenous Affairs Critic and sponsor of Bill C-262, Romeo Saganash, made the following statement:

"I was very glad to hear Minister Wilson-Raybould’s announcement last night. Prime Minister Trudeau and the Liberal government’s support for my Bill C-262 is a meaningful step toward recognition and respect of Indigenous rights by Canada.

The UN Declaration is a living human rights instrument that was discussed and negotiated for over 20 years. The contents of the Declaration are based on the injustices, dispossessions and discrimination voiced by Indigenous Peoples.

We are calling for action and I look forward to working with this government to ensure that Canada, in consultation and cooperation with Indigenous Peoples, supports this strong legislative framework to implement fully the UN Declaration."
