NDP statement on International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women

Jagmeet Singh, Leader of Canada’s NDP, issued the following statement:

“Every six days, a woman in Canada is killed by her intimate partner.

But while thousands of women and their children have to sleep in shelters because their home isn’t safe – and hundreds more are turned away – the Trudeau Liberal government has failed to act.

It simply isn’t good enough to call yourself a feminist but not take action while women in Canada are still facing disproportionate violence.

No one should have to live in fear – but for too many women in Canada that’s the reality. And for Indigenous women, women of colour, trans women, low-income women, disabled women, and non-binary people, that violence is even more common.

New Democrats will keep standing up for a plan to end gender-based violence, including investments in shelters and other services for women and families. We won’t rest until we have a government that’s investing in the solutions Canadian women need and deserve.

Today, let’s stand up for an end to gender-based violence – by wearing orange, by doing what we can in our own lives to stand up to sexism and violence, and by demanding action for Canadian women.”
