NDP statement on International Day against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

Canada’s NDP Leader, Jagmeet Singh, issued the following statement:

“Today, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, New Democrats recommit to standing up to hatred and discrimination wherever it occurs.

Together, we can work towards ending bigotry against 2SLGBTQI+ people and create a world where everyone can be who they are and love who they love in safety and dignity.

In more than 60 countries, members of the LGBTQI+ community continue to be criminalized, facing imprisonment, torture, violence, and even death. This is a devastating reality for people who want the freedom to be themselves, and unfortunately, it’s only getting worse. Canada must continue to be a global leader in protecting human rights with actions, not just words.

In Canada, gender-affirming care is still not covered by many provincial public health plans, and when it is covered or can be paid for, there are multi-year wait lists. We are witnessing the banning of books in libraries that include 2SLGBTQI+ people’s stories and have seen protests and threats of violence against those hosting and performing drag story time events.

New Democrats will keep up the fight against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, both in Canada and around the world. We won’t stop until 2SLGBTQI+ are safe, included, and equal everywhere”
