NDP statement on the Indigenous child welfare compensation announcement

The NDP’s Critic for Crown-indigenous Relations and Indigenous Services, Lori Idlout, made the following statement:

“For years New Democrats have called on the Liberal government to stop fighting First Nations children and families in court, and today’s news about a $40 billion commitment to ending ongoing discrimination and compensating children and families is one that we will be watching closely over the days and weeks to come.

We recognize that negotiations are ongoing, and we remain focused on making sure the lives of Indigenous families and children are improved. First Nations children are at the heart of these discussions, and ensuring how they receive compensation is still to be determined. The continued appeals, delays, and empty promises continue to hurt and deny justice to First Nations children and their families.

We are thankful for the work of Dr. Cindy Blackstock, the Assembly of First Nations, the Chiefs of Ontario, and the leadership of First Nations on fighting for what is right. Indigenous people continue to fight this government in court for basic human rights while hearing empty promises of reconciliation from the government. New Democrats will continue to push the government to back up their promises with immediate actions that improve the lives of First Nations children, families and communities.”
