NDP Statement on Black History Month

Canada’s NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“Today, New Democrats mark the first day of Black History Month. This month is a time to reflect on the remarkable achievements of Black Canadians and to thank the courageous advocates who continue to push to make Canada a better, more inclusive country.

While this is a time for celebrating and commemorating, we must also recognize that anti-Black racism and discrimination are still significant problems in Canada.

Black people continue to face barriers in their workplaces, justice system, and health care settings as systemic racism remains an issue across the country.

And in times of crises – from the COVID-19 pandemic to the current cost of living challenges— it’s BIPOC families who get hit the hardest.

The government can and must do better to address the systemic discrimination and inequities that exist in Canada.

New Democrats continue to call for meaningful reforms to policing so that all communities can have trust and confidence that they will be served and respected by all their institutions.

Black Canadians have contributed so much to this country and are integral to the fabric of our nation. Elected officials of every stripe must ensure that we are all doing the work every day – not just this month— to push for real, meaningful change so that everyone can thrive.”
