NDP statement on the appointment of the special rapporteur on foreign interference

Canada's NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

"We acknowledge Mr. Johnston’s appointment as a step forward and have confidence in his capacity to independently look at what are the next steps in this important matter. We reiterate that a public inquiry is the best way to get answers on allegations of foreign interference in our democracy. It is urgent that we restore Canadians' confidence in our election process.
In the last few weeks, Canadians have heard allegations that both Conservative and Liberal candidates may have been involved in foreign interference schemes. It’s clear that a partisan process dominated by the Conservative and Liberal parties is not the best way to answer Canadians' questions. They deserve more from their elected officials - they deserve representatives who act responsibly.
Therefore, we call on the prime minister to fully cooperate with the special rapporteur whose mandate must include looking at what the prime minister’s office knew about foreign interference and if laws were breached. In addition, he must look at whether the prime minister took the necessary steps to deal with those threats."
