NDP statement on the anniversary of the mass shooting in Nova Scotia

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh made the following statement:

“Today, we join with all Canadians in mourning the second anniversary of the mass shooting in and around Portapique, Nova Scotia. This terrible shooting was the largest mass murder in Canadian history, where 22 people were killed and three others were injured.

Canadians cannot forget the shock and horror of this senseless act of violence. These murders devastated the entire country. Our hearts go out to the families who lost loved ones and the communities who continue to bear the weight of their absence. The trauma this violence has caused Nova Scotians will no doubt take a long time to heal.

There are a lot of important questions that remain unanswered about this horrific tragedy. Sadly, the Liberal government was very slow to initiate a public inquiry and the unanswered questions that remain are causing a lot of emotional strain for the families.

New Democrats will continue to demand answers so that the public inquiry will help the families get the information they deserve. Canadians must have transparency and accountability so that this kind of tragedy can be prevented in the future.

New Democrats stand with Nova Scotians and all those who continue to grieve. We remain committed to doing all we can to ensure that a tragedy like this never happens again in Canada.”
