The NDP renews call to rescind Modi’s G7 invitation after new revelations of threats

In light of disturbing revelations about threats against former NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, NDP critic for Public Safety Jenny Kwan (Vancouver East) has issued a renewed and urgent call for the federal government to rescind its invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the upcoming G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta:

“According to a recent Global News investigation, a suspected Indian government agent with ties to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang placed Jagmeet Singh under close surveillance, prompting the RCMP to assign him a protective detail in late 2023. The agent reportedly had access to Singh’s daily routines, family information, and travel details—an alarming breach of both personal and national security.

This confirms what many in the Sikh community have long feared: that foreign interference and transnational repression are not distant concerns, but active threats on Canadian soil. The targeting of a federal party leader by a foreign regime is a direct assault on Canada’s democracy. It is utterly unconscionable that Prime Minister Mark Carney would extend an invitation to Modi under these circumstances and in light of this new information.

This is no longer just about diplomacy—it is about the safety and sovereignty of Canadians. Prime Minister Modi’s regime has now been credibly linked to the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar and the surveillance of Jagmeet Singh. Modi's long-time close associate and Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah has been credibly accused of approving these illegal activities in Canada. Inviting Modi to the G7 is a betrayal of our values and of the communities that have been living under threat.

The timing of Modi’s planned visit—coinciding with the anniversary of the Golden Temple assault and occurring just days before the second anniversary of Nijjar’s killing—only deepens the pain and outrage felt by many Sikhs in Canada.

Canada must take a stand for justice, not accommodate impunity. Continuing to engage Modi’s government without accountability undermines all efforts to defend human rights, transparency, and the rule of law.

The NDP is calling on Prime Minister Carney to immediately rescind the invitation and make clear that political violence, surveillance of elected officials, and foreign interference will not be tolerated.”
