NDP ready to continue fighting and standing up for Canadians in the new parliament

OTTAWA — Today, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, joined by newly elected NDP MPs, laid out his plan to continue fighting for Canadians amid the fourth wave of COVID-19. As Alberta and Saskatchewan are hit hardest in the fourth wave, Singh committed to keep fighting to extend supports, to bring in a national vaccination passport and better sick leave to help workers.

“We're excited to be back in Ottawa and back with colleagues to keep fighting for Canadians,” said Singh. “We showed Canadians in the last parliament that we'll fight for them. While Justin Trudeau cut help for people in this pandemic, we'll keep fighting to give more help to more people, faster.”

As part of the NDP’s priorities in this 44th Parliament, Singh stated that he will continue pushing Justin Trudeau’s government to stop their court cases against Indigenous children. New Democrats are also committed to fight to reverse the Liberals’ cut to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS). Some of Canada’s most vulnerable seniors, those living on low incomes who receive supports such as the GIS have had this taken away after receiving the CERB supports they qualified. The NDP has demanded the Liberals fix this.

“What we want to see is a government that will put the well-being and the interests of people at the heart of every decision,” said Singh. “What we are proposing today can be done immediately. Delaying help for people is wrong. Dragging Indigenous children in courts is wrong. If Justin Trudeau has the well-being of people at heart, he can do the right thing now, and New Democrats will be there to make sure of it.”
