NDP reaction to Liberal cuts to public services

NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice issued the following statement in reaction to recent Liberal cuts to Canadians’ public services:

“The recent announcement of over 1,400 job cuts at Service Canada and the Canada Revenue Agency is deeply alarming and unacceptable. These cuts represent a direct threat to the vital public services that Canadians rely on — from timely passport processing to tax assistance and essential income supports.

Canadians deserve a government that strengthens the public service, not one that undermines it through reckless layoffs. Instead of improving services, these cuts will result in longer wait times, growing backlogs, and increased pressure on the remaining workers. At a time when families are already facing affordability challenges, gutting frontline services is the wrong move.

The Liberal government promised stability. But now, thousands of dedicated public servants are being cast aside without meaningful consultation or evidence-based justification. This approach is short-sighted and damaging.

New Democrats stand with public sector workers and the Canadians who depend on them. We call on Prime Minister Carney to halt these cuts immediately, engage in good-faith dialogue with unions, and commit to investing in a strong, stable, and efficient public service.

Canadians deserve better — and we will fight to make sure they get it.”
