NDP: No More Corporate Giveaways, Time to Invest in Canadians

OTTAWA – Far too many families are living paycheque to paycheque, or worse, are already living in poverty, but the Liberal government continues to say that the economy is doing well. On Monday, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, with the NDP’s Finance Critic and Deputy Finance Critic, Peter Julian and Pierre-Luc Dusseault, sent a letter to the Prime Minister and Finance Minister ahead of the Liberal fiscal update, asking them to rule out additional giveaways to Canada’s richest corporations. Instead, the Liberal government should take concrete steps to lessen the growing debt burden placed on Canadians, and to help them achieve their dream of a prosperous future.

“Families are dealing with record levels of debt, with Canadians owing $1.69 for every dollar of household disposable income,” said Singh. “When the richest corporations ask for special treatment the Liberal government rushes to their aid – but when regular Canadians ask for relief from the housing crisis or the cost of prescription drugs, they’re told by this government to wait.”

The NDP is calling on the Liberal government to focus on solutions and policies that lessen the burden on Canadian families and on small businesses. From universal, single-payer pharmacare, to funding the Basic Income Pilot Project in Ontario, to investing immediately in housing for Canadians and for Indigenous communities, the NDP is urging the Liberal government to prioritize the real problems Canadians face every day.

“Canadians dream of a prosperous future, but too many are left behind as this Liberal government builds an economy that works for the few, instead of the many,” added Julian. “The upcoming fiscal update is the perfect opportunity for the government to show that they’re ready and willing to help Canadian families. It’s time to take concrete steps, lessen the growing debt burden placed on Canadians, and help make this simple dream of a better future a reality.”
