NDP MP Heather McPherson reacts to the introduction of for-profit health care in Alberta

Following the announcement that the Alberta government is introducing for-profit health care, NDP MP for Edmonton–Strathcona, Heather McPherson, issued this statement:

“I am disturbed by today’s announcement from the Government of Alberta to introduce American-style for-profit non-emergency health care in our province. This fall, how much someone earns will dictate how quickly they can see a doctor. It is unacceptable.

Canadians are deeply proud of our public health care system. But it has become clear that years of chronic underfunding from both the federal and provincial government has left our system in crisis.

New Democrats are calling on the government to enforce the Canada Health Act and stand up for Alberta, instead of allowing American-style two-tiered health care in our province.

Two-tiered health care means the wealthiest receive treatment first. When the Canada Health Act was unanimously passed in the House of Commons, the goal was clear: all Canadians regardless of income have a right to public health care. Today’s announcement undermines that very promise.

The NDP will always stand up to defend our right to public health care and deliver Tommy Douglas’ vision for our country.”
