NDP: Liberals make big promises on climate change, but their track record falls short

Following the release of the Liberal’s updated climate adaptation plan, NDP Environment and Climate Change critic Laurel Collins made this statement:

“More than ever, Canadians are feeling the impacts of climate change. Hundreds of communities are fighting wildfires. People are fleeing their homes and the air quality is threating people’s health.

Canadians want to see change but, over the last eight years, the Liberals have been underwhelming. They've promised more than $200 billion dollars in climate investments, but billions have gone unspent.

All the while, Justin Trudeau continues to hand out billions of dollars to ultra-rich oil and gas companies.

Trudeau and Minister Guilbeault keep claiming they’re taking the climate crisis with the seriousness it needs, yet their track record is deeply concerning and littered with broken promises.

Communities, particularly northern and Indigenous communities, are already living with the devasting impacts of a changing climate. Investments in rural and remote community infrastructure to help people cope with the changes is badly needed. Canadians need a government that helps mitigate future harm while simultaneously helping people navigate the new realities they are seeing as already. The federal government must urgently fund public projects that foster climate change mitigation and adaptation, especially those led by First Nations, Inuit and Metis knowledge keepers.

New Democrats know that we should be helping Canadians who are now living with the devastating consequences of the climate crisis – not the rich companies who are helping fuel it.

We’re going to keep fighting to stop fossil fuel handouts, and to make sure the investments needed to prevent and mitigate disasters, and support a green economy and jobs are actually made. We’ll keep pushing the Liberals to go beyond announcements and actually deliver the support that people desperately need immediately.”
