The NDP keeps fighting to guarantee the quality of post-secondary education in French across the country

OTTAWA - Alexandre Boulerice, the NDP's Deputy Leader and Official Languages Critic, has had his motion to launch a study on the way the federal government administers the funds dedicated to supporting post-secondary education in official language minority communities, pass. The study should also evaluate the concrete measures that Ottawa can put in place to ensure adequate education in the official language of choice.

"French speakers across the country are worried and with what is happening at Laurentian University, this study is all the more necessary," said Boulerice. "We must do everything we can to support French speakers in minority context and ensure that they have the necessary resources to guarantee quality education in French. The Liberals keep ducking this issue and blaming the provinces, this is unacceptable. We will continue to fight for the rights of French speakers in minority context across the country. "

The study will also focus on the particular situation in the following institutions: the University of Alberta's Campus Saint-Jean, the Université de Moncton and, of course, Laurentian University in Northern Ontario.

"If the Liberals want to show the public that they are truly committed to protecting French and the rights of official language minority communities, this is the moment to do so," said Boulerice. "The NDP will also continue to fight and put pressure on Minister Joly to introduce a bill to reform the Official Languages Act once and for all. People are afraid that the Liberals will break their promises again; New Democrats will fight to make sure they keep their word."
