NDP introduces repeal of Bill C-51

OTTAWA – On Monday, NDP MP Randall Garrison (Esquimalt – Saanich – Sooke), introduced a Private Members Bill to repeal C-51, the dangerous and ineffective legislation rushed through Parliament by the former Conservative government.

"My bill is a piece-by-piece repeal of Bill C-51,” said Garrison. “If the Liberals want to keep certain measures I invite them to make their case and work with us to defend the rights of Canadians.”

After voting for Bill C-51 in the last Parliament, the Liberals campaigned on a major roll-back of the legislation but have yet to take any action. Experts from across the country agree, Bill C-51 violates the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the government has failed to provide additional resources to tackle terrorism.

“Canadians’ opposition to Bill C-51 has been vocal and overwhelming,” said the NDP’s Critic for Public Safety, Matthew Dubé (Beloeil – Chambly). “After playing both sides of this debate, it’s time the Liberals show Canadians exactly where they stand on this Conservative legislation which infringes on civil liberties.”
