The NDP criticize the Liberal government for their lack of progress to address the National Inquiry into MMIWG

The NDP’s Critic for Women and Gender Equality, Lindsay Mathyssen, made the following statement:

“I am deeply disappointed by the Liberal government’s inability to work constructively with the Native Women’s Association of Canada and indigenous women living in Canada on an action plan to implement recommendations from the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls.

“Indigenous women, girls and LGBTQ2S+ people have been waiting two years for these recommendations to be implemented, on top of the generations of Indigenous women and girls who have waited decades for help from the Canadian government to end the systemic racism and human rights violations they face.

“This report must not sit on a shelf like the countless other reports the Liberals have failed to implement.

“The Liberal government loves to make symbolic gestures, or just say pretty words to show they are committed to reconciliation, but when it comes to making real and meaningful changes, they let politics get in the way.

“Indigenous women and girls deserve a government that will fight for them. New Democrats are committed to working with Indigenous communities to put an end to this genocide.”
