NDP calls for stronger federal action in response to alarming new COVID-19 modelling

VANCOUVER - Today, NDP Health Critic Don Davies called for a stronger, more effective federal response to the COVID-19 pandemic in light of alarming new modelling released by the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).

"The numbers released today paint a very sobering picture," said Davies. "COVID-19 is claiming the lives of 145 Canadians every single day and the situation is getting worse. Clearly, what we've been doing isn't working," said Davies. "PHAC's forecast shows that a stronger response is necessary to slow the alarming spread of COVID-19."

Canada is predicted to reach up to 796,630 cumulative cases and 19,630 deaths by January 24. As of January 14, there were 688,891 cumulative cases and 17,538 cumulative deaths in Canada. That's over one hundred thousand new cases and two thousand more deaths in just a ten day period.

PHAC's modelling shows that COVID-19 is forecast to continue surging if Canadians maintain their current number of daily contacts.

"Immediate, strong and sustained measures are needed to interrupt the rapid growth of COVID-19 in Canada," added Davies. "It's time for the federal government to step up to protect vulnerable Canadians and prevent our health care system from being overwhelmed."
