NDP calls on the Liberals to support soccer for Indigenous and Northern youth in the lead up to the World Cup

OTTAWA – On Thursday, NDP MP Niki Ashton (Churchill—Kewatinook Aski) joined athletes and coaches from across Northern Manitoba to call on the Liberal government to invest in soccer for Indigenous and Northern youth.

“Recreation saves lives in regions like ours. Soccer, the most affordable sport in the world, is a big part of many First Nations and Northern communities,” said Ashton. “Canada co-hosting the World Cup in 2026 is a historic opportunity to support soccer in Indigenous and Northern communities.”

Ashton says the federal government must step up and invest in recreation like soccer across Canada.

“This is also an opportunity for FIFA to work with First Nations and Northern communities to make a huge difference in their lives.”

Ashton added that access to affordable recreational activities like soccer is key to hope and healthy opportunities for Indigenous and Northern youth.

“The message today was clear: First Nations and Northern communities must be included in the lead up to Canada co-hosting the World Cup. I am hopeful that FIFA and the federal government will work with communities and leave a lasting legacy.”
