More evidence that the Liberals have done nothing to make the ultra-rich pay their fair share: NDP

NDP MP Peter Julian made the following statement:

“Since the pandemic began, Canadians have struggled financially while the ultra-rich have been making record profits. The most recently leaked documents, the Pandora Papers, are yet another reminder that ultra-rich Canadians are using tax loopholes to avoid paying their fair share and the government isn’t doing anything about it.

“The tax evasion scandals are piling up — the Paradise Papers, the Panama Papers, the Isle of Man Scam, and now this. But instead of fixing the problem, Justin Trudeau has reduced the number of audits of Canada’s wealthiest corporations and offered Canadians nothing but empty words.

“In 2019, Justin Trudeau promised to change the rules so the ultra-rich could stop avoiding paying their share of taxes in Canada. He broke that promise and he continues to protect the profits of the ultra-rich instead of Canadians. In Justin Trudeau's six years in office, the ultra-rich still escape criminal charges and continue to benefit from this unfair system. Not a single criminal charge has been laid against any of the ultra-rich individuals named in these leaked documents who have avoided paying their taxes.

“Enough is enough. The government has to stand up for hardworking Canadians who pay their taxes and make sure the super-wealthy do the same.

“Unlike the Liberals, Jagmeet Singh and the NDP don’t work for the super-rich and powerful. New Democrats will push the Liberals to close the offshore tax loopholes used to hide billions of dollars in tax revenue every year and ensure the wealthiest finally start paying their fair share. New Democrats will continue to fight to make sure the ultra-rich pay for the recovery, not your family.”
